A chat, a coffee, a snack at ‘Shared mobility’ – Thursday 26 September

This activity was the occasion for many of our colleagues to exchange their experience and habit regarding their mobility to work.

Some of us learned about new routes to work. There were also lots of discussion on possible alternatives to cars.

Is was a fruitful morning break.  Thanks for being present!

Solidarity with the Global movement for Climate (20-27 Sept 2019)

On these dates, there will be a series of public demonstrations taking place around the world demanding actions from the rulers of the world to save our climate.

Some people from our eco-group will take part in these demonstrations on their own account and initiative independently to their functions at the Space Pole. We take this opportunity to express our solidarity with these movements.

EVENT: presentation of the new IPCC report on Oceans and Cryosphere

We gladly relay the following information regarding the event that will take place at the ULB (Brussels) on the occasion of the release of the new IPCC report.

Our planet is changing as a result of global warming! Interested in better understanding why and how? Come and join us for the presentation of the new IPCC report on Oceans and Cryosphere. This report describes the scientific knowledge about the impact of climate change on oceans and coastal areas, and on poles, ice caps and glaciers. A summary of the report will be presented to press and policy makers on 25 September in Monaco.

You are all invited to join us for the live stream of this presentation in Brussels. Afterwards, some top Belgian scientists will discuss and clarify the results, and there will also be time for questions and interaction.

Mass movement of students and staff makes UK University go green

I found this information from a series of tweets by Jason Hickel :

Part of the information made it to the online issue of the Guardian:

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/aug/12/goldsmiths-bans-beef-from-university-cafes-to-tackle-climate-crisis?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Copy_to_clipboard

This shows how significant changes always come as a result of a strong mobilisation.

Charging point for bikes

As more and more people at BIRA-IASB use small means of electric transport to get to work (bike, scooter, etc.), a specific charging point has been made available at the institute.
The charging point is located in a small room outside the building, in the passage at level -1, next to the green room. It is active from 6:00 to 20:00.
To access it, please send an email to facility_ae.

Going on missions by plane?

A quick and dirty analysis was made of all business trips at ROB up till now in 2019, and in particular, which transport (plane, train, car, etc) was chosen.  In most cases, this is pretty obvious: everyone going to Paris has taken the Thalys and everybody going to the US has taken the plane. There are destinations however, for which it is your choice that makes the difference. Roughly half of the people go by car to Noordwijk, the other half takes the train. The same for Darmstadt. In other cases, people had to choice between train and plane and choose for the first option when travelling to destinations like Toulouse, Marseille, Gottingen or Bern. Sure this takes the better part of a day on the train, but it is way more ecological and you can work on the train. If your colleagues have chosen this option, maybe it is worth considering?

Water jugs

For the STCE annual meeting, we drank tap-water from water jugs instead of expensive water in plastic bottles.
Less trash, less costs, no lugging bottles from the shop to the observatory.

Great concept!

Here it starts.

This Blog will contain happy news brought to you by the “Working Group Climate” with representatives of the 3 institutes on the Space Pole, RMI, ROB and BIRA. We hope to bring you real-live stories that show you ecological alternatives are not only within reach but also big fun.
